WHEN YOU GET IN THE DOOR, DROP THE WORRIES OF THE DAY YOUR FEET FEEL SORE AND YOU WONDER AT THE WAY THE HOURS RACE BY LIKE SOMEBODY’S STOLEN CAR YOU THINK WITH A SIGH DOES ANYONE CARE ANYMORE? WELL OF COURSE THEY DO AND YOU KNOW THE 'THEY' S YOU AND YOUR NEIGHBOUR MOST LIKELY FEELS THE SAME ON THE RIVER OF LIFE THROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR, I'VE DISCOVERED WE'RE ALL PLAYING THE SAME GAME ONCE INSIDE COMFORTABLE IN YOUR SKIN THE CANDLE LIGHT HELPS YOU BEGIN THE DAY DRIFTS AWAY WITH THE BACKGROUND MUSIC YOU THINK SOMEDAY YOU MIGHT JUST LOSE IT BUT YOU HANG ON COS TOMORROW CAN BE GREAT GOT TO HANG ON COS IT'S NEVER TOO LATE

One step at a time. Never lose sight of the goal I keep reminding myself as I Fall.   The winding path,  not sure of the way With a quiet laugh  at the end of today Before the sun sets, before it gets.    To dark too see Too many thoughts in a line while I balance the load Keeping an eye on the time.  I’m in work mode The ticking clock, who knows where time goes Picking a lock, where’s the key, well, who knows A bit to much for me, a big mystery     and it’s too dark to see. Too dark to see, and there’s nothing to fear It seems to me there’s just a ring in my ear Thought I knew my way, when I set out today,  But now see it’s too dark to see It all seemed so easy, in the light of day Now it’s turning freezing  under the Milky Way You can’t count all them stars, that much is plain  You see with your eyes a fraction they say

Bigger 03:59
WHEN I THINK OF THIS COUNTRY, WHAT WERE SUPPOSED TO BE WHAT’D WE COME HERE FOR? ARE WE ANY MORE FREE? THERE'S AN EARLY TWILIGHT, A SIGN IN THE SKY THINK I’LL LAY LOW TONIGHT, SEE WHAT TRANSPIRES. IT'S BIGGER THAN YOU AND IT'S BIGGER THAN ME. THE UNDERLYING ECHOES OF LONG AGO FOUGHT WARS I CATCH IN THE EYES OF STRANGER I PASS IN THE DOOR IT'S NOT SO MUCH IN THE BACK OF HIS MIND, IT'S MORE TO THE FORE IT DRIVES MOST OF OUR THOUGHTS, SHAKES ME TO THE CORE IT'S BIGGER THAN YOU AND IT'S BIGGER THAN ME WERE OVER DRESSED FOR THE PARTY, JUST NEED YOUR WITS AND A KNIFE THERE'S TWO TIRED CHILDREN AN EXHAUSTED WIFE THERE'S A DEAL WITH A BANKER. NO ONE CAN DENY TO STAKE OUT A CLAIM TO HANG ON TO TIL YOU DIE IT'S BIGGER THAN YOU AND IT'S BIGGER THAN ME. YOU NEED A JOB ON THE RAILROAD OR SOMETHING QUITE TAME TO KEEP UPPING THE ANTE TO REMAIN IN THE GAME HISTORY’S LONG REACHING FINGERS CREEP UP FROM BEHIND YOU SENSE THERE'S MORE TO THE PICTURE YOU REACH FOR THE WINE IT'S BIGGER THAN YOU, AND ITS' BIGGER THAN ME WHO DO YOU VOTE FOR? WHO GETS THE NOD? JUST ANOTHER CLEAN CUT CRIMINAL TALKED UP ON THE BOX I GOT NO TIME TO BEGIN TO TUNE IN TOO BUSY PAINTING PICTURES WITH A WARY GRIN IT'S BIGGER THAN YOU AND IT'S BIGGER THAN ME YOU CAN GO ON RHYMING. ’TIL THE SUN’S LONG SUNK DOWN TO FIND YOU'RE ONLY MIMING, LIKE THE GUY IN THE GOWN HE’S STANDING ONCE A WEEK TO EMPOWER THE SMALL AND THE MEEK IS HE A WANDERING WOLF, DRESSED UP WITH THE SHEEP? IT'S BIGGER THAN YOU AND IT'S BIGGER THAN ME WE'RE A STRANGE OLD BUNCH. MOST OF US SO SHALLOW THE REST OF US OUT TO LUNCH, LIVING LIFE WAY TO MELLOW THE PASSION IS BURIED ALONG WITH MOST OF THE BOOKS THEY’RE LOCKED UP IN THE LIBRARY, NO ONE TAKING A LOOK IT'S BIGGER THAN YOU, AND IT'S BIGGER THAN ME AT LEAST THERE'S A FEW OF US STILL TRYIN TO BE FREE

The Flow 03:20
WHEN YOU PULL THE CURTAINS BACK AND THE GENTLE MORNING LIGHT IS SHINING, TRUE THERE’S THE SOUND OF A FEW PASSING CARS PEOPLE OFF TO JUST WHATEVER THEY DO YOU’RE STILL NOT FULLY AWAKE AND YOU’RE YAWNING AS YOUR DREAMS FILTER THROUGH YOU’RE REMINDED OF A FEW PASSING SCENES WITH A BLINK THEY’RE GONE THAT’S WHEN YOU KNOW THERE’S NO HARM IN LAYING LOW WHERE THERE’S NO FEAR WHEN YOU’RE LETTING GO AND THERE’S NO TIME LIKE NOW TO REST AND GROW AND THERE’S NO ONE CAN AVOID THIS FLOW IT'S LIKE A RIVER IDEAS WAIT ROUND THE BEND IF WE GIVE INTO THE NOW THEN WE CAN REST AND MEND

Remember running along the beach Pretending for a moment you’re a bird September sun is trying to reach Through the clouds & for a moment its allowed Smiling in the face of adversity Remember friends will come to lend a helping hand You’re sighing in the race of the big city You’re wondering how it's all going to end Put those feelings away Find the colours behind the grey and paint a picture That’ll serve to say I’m ok Keep in mind nothings truly out of reach Believe for a moment it’ll come to good Then you’ll find this world is trying to teach us through a series of magic moments Shining in night, in the night in the dark, unknown the moon appears, earth's constant friend Brighter than bright, The night’s already flown No point in wondering how it's going to end Do Do Do Whatever it's all about You know you’re. gonna find your way Whenever you start to doubt You know you’re gonna Be OK.

YOU’RE AS FREE AS YOU CHOOSE TO BE DOES THE WIND ASK PERMISSION TO BLOW? DO THE CLOUDS WAIT BEFORE THEY RUSH OVER THE SEA? OR DO THEY THROW CAUTION TO THE WIND AND JUST GO? WHY DO WE HOLD OURSELVES BACK BOUND BY DUTY, SELF DOUBT OR LACK THE WILL TO SIMPLY CHOOSE TO CHANGE TACK PUSH AWAY, SET THE SAILS, RING THE BELL FORGET THE FEAR, EMBRACE THE FUN KEEP IT NEAR, NOW YOU’VE BEGUN WHISPERED CONCERNS OF OTHERS ARE NO CONCERN OF YOURS THERE'S NO RETURNING EITHER ONCE YOU’VE OPENED THE DOORS YOU’RE FREE, COS YOU’VE CHOSEN TO BE RIDE WITH THE SEASONS, THE FEEL OF THE DAY KEEP AN EYE ON THE HORIZON AND LISTEN TO THE SEA EVERYTHING ELSE SIMPLY RECEDES, THERE'S NO DEBT TO PAY SAIL ON NOW, INTO WHATEVER MAY BE WHAT FISH WAIT QUIETLY IN THE BLUE? CAST AWAY YOUR ANCHOR, YOUR WORRIES, SET YOURSELF FREE FOLLOW THE FEELING WHICH YOU KNOW TO BE TRUE

THERE’S A VISION WE’RE ALL BORN WITH IT CAME FROM STARS BEFORE WE BEGAN WE SENSE THE TRUTH IS CLOSE THEN ONE DARK NIGHT WE START TO DIG WITHIN.  THE TEST OF MAN BUT NOT ALL OF US HAVE THE URGE, IN FACT MOST HAVEN’T JUST WALKED AWAY - THEY RAN CAN BE A FRIGHTENING  THING TO FACE BECAUSE WHAT LIES DEEP WITHIN IS THE TEST OF MAN WE'RE INTERTWINED COS WERE ON THE SAME VINE THERE'S UNDENIABLY A MYSTERY HERE.   BUT YOU SENSE A PLAN SOME OF US ARE RIPE. SOME ARE NEARLY FALLING OFF GO ON, HAVE A TASTE YOU GONNA TEST THE FRUIT?  THAT’S THE TEST OF MAN IT'S A TRAIL OF MYSTERY A LARGELY UNTRODDEN TRACK TO SOLVE THE RIDDLE OF OUR LIVES, KEEP MOVING DESPITE THE PAIN.  THAT’S THE TEST OF MAN IS IT A TEST? SOME SAY ITS A JOKE I'D SAY WE'RE BLESSED AND IT'S TIME WE SPOKE ABOUT LETTING GO, MAKE ROOM FOR WHAT'S NEW AND NOW IT’S TIME TO CHOOSE THE TEST OF MAN

Rainy Night 03:18
It's a rainy night, cold winter I remember as a child. I lose myself. I find myself. On a rainy night. Did we invent God to make sense of selves? Within ourselves, around each other? We lose ourselves. We find ourselves On a rainy night Cold winter I remember as a child, I lose myself. I find myself. On a rainy night We tend to cease improving. We've thrown it all away Pretend we are in a movie. And movies can be replayed. We lose ourselves We find ourselves We lose our faith We find our faith On A rainy night

SEAGULLS APPROACH ME LIKE SOULS OUT OF THE NIGHT THEY APPEAR IN THE DARK GLEAMING WHITE THE HINT OF SPRING IN THE AIR, THE DULCET TONES OF THE CITY, NEAR A STARLESS EVENING, REFLECTED STREET LIGHT ABOVE ME THE CLOUD A DARK HANGING SHROUD THE MINOR THREAT OF RAIN STILL PUDDLES IN THE DRAIN A REMINDER OF ANOTHER CHANGEABLE DAY STILL I’VE NEVER KNOWN ONE YOU’D EVER THROW AWAY NO MATTER HOW IT GOES Y’KNOW I’D NEVER THROW A DAY AWAY. LIFE JUST APPEALS TO ME WITH ALL IT’S UPS AND DOWNS THE HAPPINESS THE FACES, THE WORRIED FROWNS THE HINT OF WAR, THE FEAR SO FAR AWAY, YET NEAR NEVER CAN DRIVE FEAR FOR LONG UNDERGROUND THE GATHERING CLOUD, THE LINGERING DOUBT A SHADOW COMES, FALLS OVER THE SUN A REMINDER OF PAST TRAGIC DAYS STILL I’VE NEVER KNOWN ONE YOU’D EVER THROW AWAY NO MATTER HOW IT GOES Y’KNOW I’D NEVER THROW A DAY AWAY. I’D NEVER THROW A DAY AWAY. THEY ALL ADD UP TO A COLLECTIVE CUP THE SHADOWS PROVIDE THE CONTRAST HIGHLIGHTS PROVIDED BY THE TRIUMPHS THE JOYS THE HIGHS AND THE LOWS NO MATTER HOW IT GOES Y’KNOW I’D NEVER THROW A DAY AWAY. NEVER THROW ONE AWAY.

There's just one race Make no mistake Some say we got two shows We'll have to see how it goes Should be a full free life But there's knots we've tied For me and for you We're adrift on the blue The Great unknown It’s where we've always been. When will we wake up There's no us and them. Well here's no regrets But we can’t forget Days that are long gone we just carry on Yes tomorrow waits But make no mistake Better get along now We’ll work it out somehow The Great unknown It’s where we've always been. When will we wake up There's no us and them. Reach out. Try and understand Teach us . Don't hide your head in the sand Leave us something to hang on to Believe us there's something we need to do There's no us and them.

about

This album of Folk Rock songs came together in a very organic relaxed manner, somewhat ‘out of time’: 5 were written and basic tracks recorded in a week a few years back; 3 written together recently; & I provided another 4.
The overall effect of the music and lyrics is: it’s a relaxing ride – a mixture of ballads and medium tempo ‘toe-tappers’.
The lyrics speak a lot about personal freedom. The heavier subjects are touched on unflinchingly, but the overall effect is it’s an uplifting celebration of life.
The 2 voices take turns on lead vocals while the other provides harmonies. On some songs the piano leads the way & on others, the guitar carries the song. The interplay between the guitar and piano provides a constantly changing underlying focus. This approach comes from the thousands of gigs we did when we were performing as a duo in NZ.
The recorded arrangements are full without being crowded. The vocals & the vocal harmony deliver the lyrics with a dynamic instrumental backdrop. It’s all about the song. Paul’s bass and drums provide the framework where required for his guitars & harmonica & Pete’s piano, keyboards, organ & keyboard strings fill things out. All songs were recorded by sending ongoing ‘wavs’ back and forth online.

The song order was based on the music, rather than the lyrics. But the lyrics tell a story, so it’s very much like these songs belong together in the running order they’ve ended up in.

Although we’ve lived in different countries for years now, the wonders of modern technology has meant we’ve been able to continue to write and record music like this together - with headphones on and eyes shut, it almost felt like we were in the studio together, even though Australia and New Zealand are separated by the Tasman ocean.
